3rd suspect arrested for Cordoba student murders

Police capture a third suspect accused of involvement in the killing of two Colombian students in the department of Cordoba in January, El Espectador reported Wednesday.

Rafael Ernesto Grandes Serpa is allegedly a member of “Los Urabeños,” the narco-trafficking group believed to have perpetrated the crime, as are the other two detained suspects Christian David Bravo and Salvador Negrete.

Grandes Serpa, who is thought to be the military chief of “Los Urabeños,” was apprehended Tuesday in the border area between the departments of Antioquia and Cordoba.

The murders, which are believed by authorities to be a case of mistaken identity, caused outrage in Bogota where the students attended the prestigious Los Andes university.

The reaction prompted the government to launch an offensive against neo-paramilitary groups, and a further eight arrest warrants that have been issued in connection with this particular case.
