Widow accused of murdering 2 husbands arrested outside Medellin

Colombian authorities have arrested Sandra Nataly Giraldo, alias “Chuky,” accused of murdering two husbands in order to take their life insurance money, along with two accomplices.

After 17 months of investigation, police arrested 24-year-old Giraldo in the municipality of Marinilla, located in the mountains southeast of Medellin (Antioquia), for allegedly killing two men that she married in 2009 and 2010, respectively, in order to obtain their life insurance coverage for a total of nearly $400,000 (COP685 million), newspaper El Espectador reported Monday.

Authorities also arrested two of the allegedly murderous widow’s accomplices in Medellin. According to newspaper El Colombiano, Giraldo is believed to have formed part of a criminal organization dedicated to insurance policy fraud.

Her first husband, Jairo de Jesus Ochoa Castrillon, was murdered in a street in Bello, a municipality located in the Aburra Valley just outside the Antioquian capital.

Police began investigations following Giraldo’s allegation that her second husband, Julian Muñoz Romero, died while fishing in the Guatape dam system, located about two hours east of Medellin, in the middle of the night.

The three detainees have been placed in jail to await trial, where they will have to respond to the charges of conspiracy to commit crimes, aggravated homicide, attempted homicide, illegally carrying firearms and fraud. They are also being investigated by authorities for five other homicides that have taken place in Antioquia under similar circumstances.
