Uribe and Santos meet in presidential palace

Colombia’s President-elect Juan Manuel Santos met with outgoing President Alvaro Uribe at 11AM in the Casa de Nariño to discuss economics, the budget and finance, in the first step in handing over power to the new leader.

Treasury Minister Oscar Ivan Zuluaga will also be present at the meeting, in which Santos and Uribe are likely to discuss the smooth transition of power.

In his acceptance speech Sunday evening Santos said his win reflected the desire of the Colombian people to see a continuation of Uribe’s policies. The “Uribista” promised to continue with those policies, particularly that of “democratic security.”

The staff of Santos’ administration are expected to be announced within the next few days.

Santos was elected president on Sunday night with 69.06% of the vote, while his opponent Antanas Mockus won 27.52%.
