Urban unemployment rises to 12.8%: DANE

Urban unemployment
in Colombia reached 12.8% in July, up 0.9% from the same month
last year, government statistics agency DANE announced Monday.

Observers of the Colombian economy consider the urban unemployment rate to be a better measurement of the job market’s health than the national rate.

The national unemployment rate increased to 12.6% in July from 12.1% in the same month last year. In June, Colombia registered 11.4%.

According to DANE, 2.6 million people were unemployed in July, up from 2.3 million in June.

The cities with the highest unemployment rate are Pereira, Manizales and Pasto. Bucaramgna, Barranquilla and Bogota registered the lowest rate. (Dow Jones)
