Students take university rector hostage

22 students were arrested on the National University campus in Bogota Friday after they had detained the university rector for five hours during a demonstration.

Some 300 students were protesting the lack of funds of the public university. During this protest, the university rector, who wanted to leave campus, was surrounded by students and wasn’t allowed to leave.

After President Alvaro Uribe ordered anti-riot police to enter the campus, the 22 suspects were arrested. Seven of them were released for being minors.

Uribe called on prosecutors and judges to seek a conviction for kidnapping for the students.
