State Council to decide fate of Bogota mayor

Colombia’s State Council, the country’s highest administrative court, will decide whether or not to bar current Bogota Mayor Gustavo Petro from office, as a result of a formal inquiry.

The inquiry centered around a 1985 incident in which Petro spent 18 months in prison for illegal weapons possession. Petro maintains authorities planted the weapons.

At the time of the conviction Petro was part of the urban guerrilla movement M-19. Petro’s defense contended he was pardoned from further criminal liability, following the group’s demobilization in 1990.

The State Council will come to a decision in the following days.
