Bogota mayor to be investigated over trash collection irregularities

No sign of respite for the embattled mayor of Bogota, who will be interrogated over alleged irregularities in pland to municipalize garbage collection, local media reported Tuesday.

The Prosecutor General will be examining the contracts Mayor Gustavo Petro’s government signed to municipalize the garbage collection for any evidence of criminal conduct.  Prosecutors will also seek to establish whether any environmental damage was done as a result of the switch from private to public operation; only 2,286 of the 4,273 tons of garbage was allegedly collected by the government immediately proceeding the changeover.

No formal investigation has been announced, however the interrogation will seek to establish whether there is sufficient grounds for a case.

The announcement comes after it emerged that congressman Miguel Gomez began a process to impeach Petro earlier this month, and has put even more pressure on the Mayor to perform.
