Policemen assassinated in northeastern Colombia

Two policemen have been assassinated in the northeast of Colombia while patrolling a village fair, local media reported Monday.

The killing took place Sunday afternoon in the village of Arauqita where locals were celebrating the annual village festival.

According to witnesses, the two cops were shot in the back by two hitmen who fled the village towards the Venezuelan border.

Arauqita is located in the northeastern Arauca department where guerrilla groups ELN and FARC, and several drug trafficking organizations are active.
