Police capture FARC commander in Medellin

Police have apprehended the alleged commander of FARC’s 34th front in the city of Medellin, reported local media Monday.

Authorities have managed to detain Fernando Palacios Salazar, alias “El Niche,” who is an alleged commander of FARC’s 34th Front. His arrest stemmed from charges of rebellion, terrorism, kidnapping and the illegal acquisition of military equipment.

While the 34th front of FARC has been most active in the region just west of Colombia’s second largest city Medellin, El Niche has also been linked to criminal activity in the northwestern department of Choco.

Police have yet to confirm further details of the operation.
