Paramilitary leader sentenced to 24 years

Former paramilitary leader Aldides de Jesus Durango, alias “Rene,” was sentenced to 24 years on Monday for the murder of 31 people, Spanish news agency EFE reported.

The prosecutor in the case stated that Rene, in his role as leader of the Southwest Bloc of Antioquia for the now-demobilized AUC, had killed the people and used the Cauca River to try and dispose of their bodies.

Rene accepted the charges brought against him and was found guilty of aggravated homicide.

He is currently being held at a medium to high security prison in Itagui, a locality near the Antioquian capital of Medellin.
