Pablo Escobar cartel boss dies penniless

Evaristo Porras, a Colombian former drug trafficker, died of a heart attack at his home in Bogota aged 62, reports El Tiempo.

The one-time drug lord was broke at the time of his death, according to his son.

Porras was one of Colombia’s biggest cocaine traffickers in the early 1980s, before being jailed on drug charges from 1984 to 2006.

“He was one of the first Colombian drug traffickers, close to fallen gang leaders like Pablo Escobar and Gonzalo Rodriguez Gacha,” former Prosecutor General Alfonso Gomez Mendez told the BBC.

Porras, like Escobar, was famed for his extravagence, building a mansion in the southern Colombian city of Leticia that was modelled on a house in the American TV series “Dallas.”

Porras spent his final years, after being released from prison, unsuccessfully trying to recover millions of dollars worth of assets which had been seized by the state.
