Opposition parties elect presidential candidates

Colombia’s two main opposition parties, Liberal Party and Polo Democratico, elected their candidates for the 2010 presidency Sunday.

The nationwide elections help the parties to determine and promote the policies they will use to counter those of the current hardline President Alvaro Uribe.

For the Liberal Party, pre-candidates Hcctor Heli Rojas Jiménez, Cecilia Lopez Montaño, Anibal Gaviria Correa, Alfonso Lopez Caballero, Alfonso Gomez Mendez, Luís Ivan Marulanda Gomez and Rafael Pardo have all campaigned to be elected as presidential candidates.

Among the Polo Democratico candidates are Carlos Gaviria, Gustavo Petro and Lucio Torres.

Most of the coalition parties have not yet defined who will represent them in the May elections. Only Cambio Radical, who opposes a third term for President Uribe, determined their candidate – party leader German Vargas Lleras. The rest are waiting for news on the referendum needed for Uribe to run again and his announcement on whether he aspires a third term or not.
