The number of contract murders in Colombia’s capital Bogota is
increasing. Sixty-five people have been assassinated by “sicarios” this
year, seven more than in the same period in 2008, say authorities.
According to statistics of the Government’s Secretariat, 37% of the victims were murdered due to arguments or fights, usually related to debts. 23% of the crimes are the product of organized crimes, like drug trafficking or territory disputes between drug sellers.
Other causes for contract murders are often broken hearts, infidelity or jealousy.
“This phenomenon is not only taking place in Bogota but in several cities in the country,” Colonel Cesar Augusto Pinzon, commander of the Metropolitan Police, told Caracol Radio Tuesday.
