Only 90 of the 268 representatives elected in Colombia’s congressional election in March have been confirmed to take their seat for the new constitutional period starting July 20, due to vote recounts taking place in regions across the country.
The delay is due to numerous complaints received by the National Registry Office of procedural irregularities on the day of the election leading many departments to demand a recount of votes.
Caracol Radio reports that votes are being recounted in 10 of Colombia’s 32 departments.
Bogota’s representative and special representatives of minority groups are also yet to be confirmed.
Of the 90 representatives that have so far been formally elected, 25 are returning to their seats and 63 are new – ten of whom are women.
Several departments have almost entirely changed their representatives, including Caldas, Quindio, Sucre and Meta.
