Millonarios to face Medellin for Colombia soccer championship

Millonarios and Independiente Medellin will face each other to see who will be crowned Colombia’s Liga Postobon champions of 2012 after a thrilling weekend of soccer.

The two teams topped their respective groups to qualify for the final but it wasn’t all plain sailing as Medellin in particular left it late to secure their passage through.

With rivals Atletico Nacional easing to a 2-0 win over La Equidad on Sunday afternoon, Medellin knew that only a win would do as they aimed to finish above their city neighbors.

And it looked like it would be heartbreak for the red side of the city as they went into the dying embers of the match with Itagui at 0-0.

However with virtually no time left on the clock substitute Andres Venegas popped up to score the vital goal and give DIM the three points they needed to progress.

In Group A Millonarios secured their passage through despite an unconvincing 0-0 draw at home to Junior.

The Bogota giants could have found themselves eliminated had Deportivo Pasto won their match at home to Deportes Tolima, however a 1-1 draw meant Millonarios top the group and go through to the final stage.

The final will be played over two legs with the first game to be played in Medellin on Wednesday 12 December and the return match in Bogota four days later.
