Medellin the world’s eighth most violent city

Colombia’s second largest city Medellin is the world’s eighth most violent city. Mexico’s Ciudad Juarez is the most violent of all, a Mexican study has revealed.

The study compared the 2008 homicide rates of the world largest cities. Ciudad Juarez, where drug gangs are involved in heavy battle over drug routes to the U.S. had a murder rate of 130 murders per 100,000 inhabitants.

Second on the list is Venezuela’s capital Caracas, third is U.S. city New Orleans and fourth is Tijuana, also in the north of Mexico.

In the 1990, Medellin was the world’s most dangerous city, but following the death of Pablo Escobar, a range of local innovative social policies and the demobilization of paramilitary groups led to a steep decline in murders.
