It was a good day for soccer in Medellin as the city’s two biggest
teams, Independiente and Nacional, moved into second and third place
respectively in the Colombian Copa Mustang.
Independiente Medellin first conceded a goal from Cartagena’s Jose Najera in the 25th minute but showed a much better performance in the second half. Luis Mosquera equalised in minute 54 and goals from Jackson Martinez (63rd and 73rd minutes) earned the away side a 1-3 victory.
Alexander Anaya and Jose Najera were sent off for Cartagena, Roger Cañas followed for DIM.
Atletico Nacional beat Junio 2-1 at Medellin’s Atanasio Girardot stadium. ‘El Principe’, Giovanni Hernandez put Junior ahead on 12 minutes but second-half goals from Sergio Galvan and Ezequiel Maggiolo turned things around for the home side. The winning goal was scored with just five minutes to go.
Junior had been without Luis Ruiz since the 51st minute, as result of a red card.
Pasto and La Equidad held each other to a 1-1 draw at Libertad stadium. The visitors from Bogota scored through Elkin Serrano in the 18th minute but Oscar Altamirano levelled in the 30th. La Equidad Goalscorer Serrano was sent off with eight minutes left.
Cucuta Deportivo scored once in each half to earn a 2-0 win over Quindio. Luis Narvaez netted both goals, one in the ninth minute and other other with three minutes left. This match didn’t end without red cards either, as Quindio’s Dany Santoya was sent for an early shower in the 55th minute.
Millonarios suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of Tolima who in turn earned their first three points. Defender Mauricio Casierra netted an own goal in the 58th minute and former Millonarios striker Milton Rodriguez made it 0-2 14 minutes later. Wilmer Diaz wouldn’t see the end of the match, getting sent off with four minutes to go.
The most spectacular match of this weekend was arguably the clash between Chico and Envigado. In Tunja, the home side took the lead through Edilio Cardoso in the 22nd minute but Envigado’s Jorge Serna equalised in the 37th.
Miguel Caneo made it 2-1 shortly after the break, only for Neider Morantes to score for 2-2 from the penalty spot six minutes after the hour. Chico had the final say though, with goals from Anuar Hurtado (74th) and Charles Monsalvo (84th). Marco Echavarria and Rafael Orrego were both sent off for Envigado in the second half.
