The Colombian government will prosecute the gang leaders in Medellin who agreed to a ceasefire, Defense Minister Gabriel Silva said Friday.
A temporary halt in Medellin’s gang warfare was reached after a group of civilians met with several key gang members in jails in various Antioquian jails and agreed to a temporary truce.
“We will denounce the creators of this pact,” Silva told Caracol Radio. “I am referring to those who are in jail because they have demonstrated that they are responsible for the wave of homicides.”
The imprisoned gang members who agreed to the pact include Jose Leonardo Muñoz, alias “Douglas,” one of the heirs to the now-extradited drug kingpin “Don Berna’s” criminal empire, Hernan Dario Giraldo Gaviria, the right-hand man to rival gang leader “Sebastian,” and Elkin Triana, leader of the “Los Triana” gang and another confidant of “Don Berna’s.”
One of the ceasefire negotiators, Jaime Jaramillo Panesso, has criticized the government’s reaction to the pact, saying that if the agreement is broken it will be the government’s fault.
