This year’s display, said to be created with 18 million lights, showcases the theme “nature, life and light.” The Christmas lights of Medellin are one of the top 10 displays in the world according to Frommer’s travel guide.

The most spectacular display of lights is to be seen along the Medellin River. In addition to the nature-themed lights along each bank of the river, visitors can enjoy a series of scenes reflecting the different ecosystems of the department of Antioquia, of which Medellin is the capital.

The river route is lined with stalls selling food and gifts and, as every year, families are flocking from far and wide to enjoy the party atmosphere.

Lights can also be found in many parks and plazas around the city and along La Playa, a road through the city centre which is closed off every night for December’s celebrations.

The lights will remain up until January 19, 2013.

Safety precautions
Visitors to the lights should be aware that along the Medellin river, in Poblado, and on La Playa and La 70, pickpockets will be active and it is important to keep an eye on your belongings. The neighborhood parks and squares are safe and virtually pickpocket-free.
