Liga Postobon: Once Caldas remain on top

Once Caldas remain on top of the Colombian Liga Postobon after day four, along with Deportes Quindio and newcomers Itagüi Ditaires.

America de Cali started the fourth round of games with a 2-1 win over Envigado on Friday, taking the side into the top eight for the first time this season. Jorge Artigas opened the scoring after 58 minutes and although Jorge Serna leveled ten minutes later, America had the final say as Daniel Zapata netted the winner with four minutes to go.

Leaders Once Caldas hosted Real Cartagena in Manizales on Saturday and ended up winning 3-2 with goals from Carlos Carbonero and Wason Renteria (2). Orlando Osorio and Jorge Molina found the target for the visiting side.

Also on Saturday, the match between Independiente Medellin and Millonarios saw the visitors go ahead three times, only to have the hosts equalise on all three occasions. Edison Toloza, Wilson Carpintero and Rafael Robayo each put their side in the lead, but had their goals canceled out by Santiago Trellez (two) and Luis Mosquera. The latter scored from the penalty spot in the 75th minute, 3-3.

On Sunday, Deportes Quindio rejoined Once Caldas at the top following a 1-0 win at Atletico Huila. The only goal came from Juan Vela with 12 minutes left to play in the city of Neiva.

Itagüi Ditaires added another impressive result to their account, beating La Equidad 2-1 despite first conceding a goal from Luis Yanes in the first half. Jhonny Vasquez restored the balance two minutes after the hour, and Elkin Serrano made it 2-1 in the 79th minute. Itagüi won the match despite playing most of the second half a man down following Julian Mesa’s red card.

Deportes Tolima moved up to fourth place following a hard-fought 3-2 win at Cucuta. With goals from Danny Santoya, Rafael Castillo and Wilmer Parra, Tolima were one of only two away teams to win their game in this round. Geovanni Garcia and Wilmer Diaz (own goal) delivered Cucuta’s goals.

Junior of Barranquilla beat Deportivo Pereira 2-1 with goals from Anselmo De Almeida and Luis Paez. Jorge Britez scored for the visiting side. The match will mostly be remembered for an owl that entered the pitch before being hit by the ball and subsequently kicked by Pereira player Luis Moreno. Reportedly, the own did survive the act of animal abuse.

In the day’s remaining games, Santa Fe and Atletico Nacional drew 0-0 while Boyaca Chico beat Deportivo Cali 2-0 in Tunja. Following the defeat, Cali manager Jaime de La Pava announced his resignation.
