El Gran Combo to celebrate 50-year anniversary in Colombia

Puerto Rican salsa orchestra El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico will celebrate its 50 year history in Medellin and Bogota in December.

The band will first preform in Medellin on December 7th before moving up to Bogota for a show on December 8th.

The famous Salsa orchestra was dubbed ”The University of Salsa” due to the fact that so many famous salsa musicians started their career in the group. Since their inception in 1962 they have become Puerto Rico’s most successful musical group.

The outfit embarked on a world tour in 2011, stopping off in Asia, Europe and parts of Oceania as preparation for their 5 decades of non-stop work.

Colombian newspaper El Espectador reported that Rafael Ithier, the founding member of the group, now 86 years old, saying the group is ”as relevant as the first day” going on to state that the most important thing for the band is representing Puerto Rico.

Throughout their 50-year career, the Gran Combo have released over 50 albums and received numerous awards such as gold record status and Latin Grammys.
