Key boss of Medellin mafia arrested: Police

Medellin police said Thursday they have arrested another top figure of local crime syndicate “Oficina de Envigado.”

The arrest of “Fredy Colas” and seven suspected lower-ranking members of the crime syndicate came a day after the arrest of the Oficina’s top leader, “Sebastian” just outside of Colombia’s second largest city.

According to El Tiempo, the suspects were arrested in Caicedo, a neighborhood in the east of the city where the Oficina has been fighting with a dissident group over the past few months.

Colas, whose real name is Fredy Alexander Duarte, is alleged to be the security chief of Sebastian.

The Oficina de Envigado was created by late drug lord Pablo Escobar and later incorporated in the paramilitary structure of the AUC. The organization had been under control of Sebastian since late 2010 and is held responsible for most drug dealing and extortion in the city.
