Colombia’s State Council on Thursday called for “Timochenko,” the leader of the country’s largest rebel group FARC, to be put before an international court for crimes against humanity.
The Council of State asked the government to submit a case to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to prosecute the FARC chief for war crimes committed during his participation in the 50-year civil conflict reported Caracol Radio.
The decision also recommended Colombia’s prosecutor general reopen a case against Timochenko who is believed to be in hiding near or in Venezuela.
The latest request by the Council of State reiterates legal pressure that has been maintained against the FARC leadership in spite of the negotiations that are currently dealing with the rebels’ involvement with drug trafficking.
Timochenko was handed a 38 year prison sentence along with one of the FARC’s leading peace delegates in January for their responsibility in the 2001 murder of a politician in 2001.
