Delegations from 20 countries will gather to discuss security measures in the 54th edition of the Conference of Leaders of the Air Forces of America (CONJEFAMER) in Colombia’s second largest city, Medellin, international media reported on Tuesday.

The conference will focus on topics such as the use of airspace resources for defense and national security, according to Bogota’s Caracol Radio.

In particular, the System of Cooperation of the Air Forces of America (SICOFAA) will be evaluated. Conversations will be held surrounding the integration of air force technology and manpower among the various nations in order to collectively combat any transnational threat towards the region, which constitutes a top priority for the conference, reported Cuba’s Prensa Latina newspaper.

The meeting will include representatives from the Air Force of Colombia (FAC), among other notable nations such as Argentina, Canada, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Jamaica, and Uruguay. Despite territorial tensions between Colombia and Nicaragua’s national security forces, Nicaragua will also be in attendance.

Colombia will serve as the conference headquarters for the first time since 1991, according to Prensa Latina.

The conference will last five days, where the performance of the combination of the air force organizations will be analyzed according to different situations and operations, which will be held in restricted areas.

“Throughout this meeting we’ll look to unite and generate bonds of brotherhood between the air forces of the continent, as well as bring about synergy,” said General Guillermo Leon Leon, commander of the FAC as quoted in Caracol.

Leon added that he hoped to establish important agreements regarding the regional fight against drug and weapons trafficking, as well as disaster plans “between the nations in case one of our beautiful countries in Latin America is affected by a natural disaster.”
