Huila join Medellin in Copa Mustang final

Atletico Huila earned an impressive 4-1 victory over a weak Santa Fe side to secure their top spot in Group B of the Copa Mustang second round and join Independiente Medellin in the final.

Huila were clearly the better team in the match with Santa Fe and took the lead through Ivan Velasquez in the 5th minute.

Velasquez again found the target in minute 22 and although Santa Fe got something back through Andres Gonzalez in the last minute before the break, the Bogota outfit had little more to add in the second half.

Instead, it was Huila which added another two goals later on as Nelson Barahona scored in the 86th minute and Jeison Quiñonez made it 4-1 in added time.

Atletico Nacional needed Huila and Santa Fe to draw their match to keep a chance of reaching the final, but as that did not happen, their 3-4 win at Tolima was of little importance.

In Group A, already qualified Medellin drew 2-2 with Pereira in a match that had mostly been dubbed a test of continuity for the home side.

The game was marred in advance as supporters of Medellin attacked Pereira’s player bus with rocks. Pereira captain Arnold Palacios was hit in the face and although his injuries were relatively mild, he was no longer able to feature in the match.

The first leg of the 2009 Copa Mustang II final is scheduled to be played in Neiva on December 16, and to be concluded in Medellin four days later.
