Hollywood takes another crack at Pablo Escobar

A new movie about Colombian druglord Pablo Escobar is starting to gain some momentum in Hollywood, with the production and investment company Relativity Media acquiring the film.

From the mind of an almost unknown British director, Piers Ashworth, comes a new attempt at an Escobar flick that will focus on the manhunt for the drug kingpin.

A source with knowledge of the movie told the L.A. Times the project, allegedly titled “Silver or Lead,” will be produced by Mark Canton, one of the producers of “300” and other Hollywood gems such as “Piranha 3-D” and “Jack Frost.”

This film is not Hollywood’s first attempt at an Escobar movie, with writer, director, and producer Joe Carnahan as well as Hollywood legend Oliver Stone both failing in their attempts to make a movie. Even the fictional movie on the HBO show “Entourage” failed horrendously, with the film titled “Medellin” heading straight-to-DVD.

Scott Steindorff, producer of “The Lincoln Lawyer,” confirmed to Colombia Reports that he and director Brad Furman are also in the process of making a movie about Colombia’s most famous citizen ever.

One can only wonder whether the movie powerhouse Relativity Media, which recently brought us  Hollywood successes such as the Oscar-nominated “The Social Network” and “The Fighter,” can finally bring a feature film about the world’s most notorious druglord to fruition.
