‘Hey Mozart!’ returns to Medellin

For the third consecutive year and for the first time in Medellin, young Colombians from around the country will participate in the exciting “Hey Mozart!” competition this coming Sunday.

The ‘Hey Mozart!’ competition was created by the University of North Carolina in Greensboro to stir the creative talents of fledgling musicians under the age of 12.

Children work with a professional team of teachers, performers, directors and producers to compose the tunes. A jury then chooses the best one for the concert and a CD.

“Music composition… is an important activity for the appropriation of the language of music,” said Juan Antonio Cuellar, CEO of the National Batuta Foundation, which sponsors the event.

This year’s round of young competitors come from the departments of Antioquia, Nariño, Putumayo, Huila, Cundinamarca, Guajira, Arauca and Guainia.

With the support of Colombia’s Culture, 47 children have participated in the project since it began in Colombia in 2010.

The concert will begin Sunday, October 7 at 11AM in Medellin’s Metropolitan Theater, admission is free.
