Government prepares emergency plan to fight unemployment

Colombia’s Finance minister Oscar Ivan Zuluaga announced the Government
will launch an emergency plan to fight unemployment in the country.

Despite a growing economy, half a million Colombians lost their job in 2008. No less than 2 million Colombian workers are unemployed, 7 million are underemployed and another 14 million are inactive.

To fight this unempyment and underemployment, the government wants to offer training to those who lose their jobs to make them reintegrate as soon as possible. “It is necessary we give them the opportunity so that they can reinsert in the labor market faster and find alternative jobs,” the Minister said Wednesday.

The Minister stressed the importance for a continuous economic growth to prevent a further increase of the number of unemployed in Colombia.
