2 Medellin girls found dead after meeting Facebook ‘friend’

Two girls who arranged a meeting with a stranger via have been found dead in Colombia’s second city Medellin, television network Caracol reported Monday.

The two 16-year-old girls were reported missing on February 19, and their bodies were later discovered on the “Pan de Azucar” (Sugar Loaf) mountain in the capital of the central Antioquia department.

Initial reports suggest that they had been asphyxiated but that their bodies showed no signs of rape or torture.

According to Caracol, the girls had told their parents that they were only going out to buy chocolates.

Ferney Jimenez, the boyfriend of one of the girls, said however that they “went to meet him [the unknown man] on Saturday [19] in the day,” and that his girlfriend “never returned,” describing how he tried “calling and calling” her throughout the day before reporting her missing.

The police made a special announcement to all parents in order to alert them of the dangers of social networking sites and to prevent cases like this occurring in the future.
