Gang ringleader implicated in students’ murder

Initial investigations indicate Roberto Vargas Gutierrez, alias “Gavilan,” ringleader of the gang “Los Urabeños,” in the murder of two Colombian students, Caracol Radio reported Thursday.

Universidad de los Andes students Margarita Gomez (23) and Mateo Matamala Neme (26) were shot multiple times while in San Bernardo de Viento (Cordoba) on January 11, according to the medical report by the government forensics agency.

The biology students arrived to the area known as La Camaronera on January 4 to film and photograph the biodiversity of its pristine Caribbean beaches, which are on a known drug route.

Officials assume that the two were mistaken as members of an intelligence agency by the local gang.

A special investigation tam has been sent to the crime scene and Colombia is offering a $270 (COP500,000) reward for information leading to an arrest, President Juan Manuel Santos announced at the Universidad de los Andes in Bogota Thursday.
