Recent guerrilla violence in the south-west Colombian Cauca department is due to the FARC‘s attempt to recover an important drug route from central Colombia to the Pacific, said the governor Saturday.
According to governor Guillermo Alberto Gonzalez Mosquera, the recent attacks on towns like Toribio, Argelia and Caldono are because the FARC are trying to recover this strategically important corridor from government forces that are hindering easy access to the Pacific Ocean from where drugs is shipped to Central America and Mexico.
The Cauca department has been one of the most violent of Colombia all year. This week alone there were three alleged guerrilla attacks on public forces.
Apart from the FARC, drug gangs like the Rastrojos and the Urabeños are also said to be operating in the area.
