IG files charges against ex-congressman for ‘parapolitics’

Colombia’s Inspector General Alejandro Ordoñez filed charges against former senator Ciro Ramirez Thursday for his paramilitary links while holding public office.

Ramirez was sentenced to seven years in jail for parapolitics but has now been freed. According to the Inspector General’s Office “the ex-senator maintained since 2000 and relationship and collusion with paramilitary groups, with whom, as a congressman, he met with on several occasions in order to reach agreements that would have reciprocal benefits.”

The Inspector General’s Office, based on telephone intercepts and numerous witness testimonies, reached the conclusion that Ramirez obtained his position with the aid of the AUC and he formally and materially participated in the consolidation of illegal interests of the paramilitary group.

The ex-congressman alleged had links to Henry de Jesus Lopez Londoño, alias “Mi sangre,” the ex commander of the Capital Block of the AUC and with Rodrigo Perez Alzate, alias “Julián Bolívar.”
