Colombian sports official who helped lead Olympic committee shot to death

Colombian sports official Sergio Rodriguez Jaramillo has been shot to death in Medellin, local police said Saturday.

Rodriguez Jaramillo was shot by attackers while in a car with a guide Friday. Police said he was taken to Medellin General Hospital but was dead when he arrived.

Rodriguez Jaramillo helped organize the 1991 Pan American Games in Havana and represented his country’s Olympic committee for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He oversaw the athletes village during the 2010 South American Games held in Medellin and was president of the Pan American Squash Federation.

A good, very special and very appreciated person was assassinated,” Medellin’s government sectretary Juan Felipe Palau told local press.

According to the Antioquia sports federation, Rodriguez Jaramillo “gave Antioquian and Colombian spors the best of his capacity and vision.”

Police are searching for the assailants and exploring a motive for the attack.
