Colombian drug lord sentenced to 16 years in US prison

A Miami judge sentenced a former leader of the Colombian Norte del Valle cartel to 16 years in jail Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges.

Because of his guilty plea, the 47-year-old Jaime Alberto Marin-Zamora saw his sentenced reduced from 24 to 16 years.

The drug lord, also known as “Beto Marin” was arrested on an island off the Venezuelan coast in September 2010 and plead guilty to the charges in October last year.

Marin’s faction of the Norte del Valle cartel is now active under the name of the “Rastrojos” and considered the most powerful of Colombia’s drug trafficking organizations.
