Colombian authorities capture ‘Urabeños logistics expert’

Colombian authorities have caught an alleged member of the notorious gang “Los Urabeños” in the north of the country, local media reported Tuesday.

According to newscast CM&, the 37-year-old suspect, known by his alias ”Pitbull”, was caught thanks to a joint operation carried out between the Army and the Police.

Pitbull was a member of the FARC, Colombias largest leftist guerrilla group, joining the rebels’ 19th front in 1995 under the alias ”Sombra,” helping to coordinate numerous attacks againt the authorities in the northern department of Magdalena.

After abandoning the FARC, the former guerrilla joined the Urabeños, becoming the logistics coordinator for the area. He supplied and managed an arsenal of weapons for the gang from hand guns, assault rifles and numerous vehecles, allegedly used in cases of homiside anong other crimes.

The Urabeños were formed by former members of demobilized paramiitary organization AUC in the first decade of this century and have since grown out to become the country’s most powerful neo-paramilitary drug trafficking organization with a particulrly strong presence along the Caribbean coast.
