Colombia police crack down on animal cruelty

A new police code will tighten sanctions on animal mistreatment in Colombia, resulting in fines for the perpetrators, according to local media Sunday.

According to Radio Caracol, the new code will prohibit certain acts which are deemed as animal cruelty with fines of just over $300 to be imposed.

The code aims to protect animals which are mistreated especially in the way of public or private “entertainment.”

Fines will be imposed for people found guilty of: promoting dog fighting, abusing or torturing animals for public or private entertainment, doping an animal for a show or using live or dead animals for films.

The code also seeks to protect animals against seemingly mindless mistreatment such as using animals as target practice, burying a live animal and skinning live animals.

Horse-drawn vehicles are also prohibited, which comes a month after the mayor of Bogota Gustavo Petro announced that he wanted to eliminate this form of transport in the capital city.
