Colombia massively celebrates independence

Hundreds of thousands of Colombians Monday celebrated the country’s
Independence Day by visiting one of the nearly 1,100 organized concerts.

The country’s biggest rock stars, cultural icons and philharmonic orchestras performed on one of the stages througout the country, attracting masses of people, especially in big cities like Bogota, Medellin, Cali and Barranquilla.

Colombian President Uribe was in Tame, Arauca, where he attended a hommage to the founding fathers of Colombia, Simon Bolivar and Francisco de Paula Santander.

According to Uribe, the ceremony was “simple, without pretense, but in total solidarity of the persuit of welfare of Colombians.”

The Tame festivities were accompanied by the strictest security measures amid fears guerrillas would carry out an attack.

The formality of the parade in Tame was contrasted by the colorful and joyful celebrations of Colombia’s independence in other cities, where Colombians were treated to the finest of their music and dance.
