One of Colombia’s most important culinary event is set to kick off in the historical city of Popayan.

The 12th edition of the National Gastronomy Congress will bring together culinary personalities from Colombia and around the world. This year Popayan in the south west of Colombia has invited the towns of Hondarribia, Spain and Cartagena as official guests.

Cartagena chefs will provide guests with a culinary show of traditional seafood dishes from the Caribbean coast. There will be gastronomic public workshops as well as free lectures from the Cartagena experts who will explain the gastronomic and cultural characteristics of the historic city.

Some of the Cartagena dishes on offer will be coconut rice, black posta, egg arepa, carimañola, platanos tentacion, cocadas and corozo.
The small port town of Hondarribia one of the greatest exponents of Basque cuisine. The cuisine is based on seafood, fruit and excellent local meats. Stand out dishes are kokotxas hake, sea bream grilled marmitako (stew with tuna and potatoes) and crab.

Popayan is the only place in Latin America tha has been declared a “City of Gastronomy” by UNESCO in tribute to its significant tradition of regional cooking.

The National Gastronomy Congress of Popayan has been held each September since 2003, and in 2005 was recognized by UNESCO as a cultural heritage event of the United Nations creative network. As it has an academic format, it is distinguished from other culinary events and is the only one to be listed nationally.
