11 feared dead after bus crashes into Cauca river

Eleven people are missing after the small bus they were traveling in went off the road and into a river on the Medellin to Manizales road on Sunday night. One person managed to escape and alert authorities.

According to witnesses the bus ran off the road when it ran over a tree trunk. It appeared the driver lost control of the vehicle and it went over the side of the cliff and into the Cauca river below.

The only survivor at this point, Olga Teresita Ramirez, said that there were two families from La Ceja in Antioquia on board. Among them were five children. They had hired the bus to go on a religious pilgrimage to Buga, in Valle del Cauca.

The road they were traveling on has a history of accidents, including vehicles falling into the river.

The Red Cross, police and firemen have all mounted searches to comb the river for survivors.
