Bogota university student accuses professor of racism

Colombia’s Ombudsman’s Office has opened an investigation of a professor at Bogota’s Universidad Distrital for alleged racial discrimination against a black student, local media reported.

The investigation seeks to determine if Professor Yaroslav Chavarrio acted out of bias towards student Heiler Yesid Ledezma Leudo from the department of Choco.

The telecommunications engineering student stated that on multiple occasions Professor Yaroslav, a white man with blond hair, made racism remarks and made fun of the student by mockingly asking him why he felt offended.

The student also asserted that he was not in agreement with the university’s own investigations made regarding his reports, stating that they had not reacted to the matter seriously by taking disciplinary measures.

The Ombudsman’s Office will also be investigating the university to determine if they took appropriate action in their response to the student’s allegations.
