Barreras appointed interim U Party leader

Colombian congressman Roy Barreras on Tuesday was appointed interim president of the U Party while a permanent leader is found.

Newspaper El Tiempo reported that Barreras could be the temporary manager of the party until December, however, rumors are circulating that it could take longer for a decision to be made.

Leaving party president, Congressman Plinio Olano, was reported saying that “we are in a process of electing a new president for the party and I must be absent for personal reasons. It was decided that Roy Barreras is temporarily responsible for the party,” going on to report that the absence of a current leader cannot stop the process of finding a collective or a single leader.

The U party, or the Social Party of National Unity, takes a Liberal-Conservative stance, while adopting the ideas of former president Alvaro Uribe. The U Party currently backs its founder, Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos.
