‘Escobar film dishonors murdered soccer star’

The family of murdered Colombian soccer star Andres Escobar say that documentary film “The Two Escobars” exploits the memory of the sportsman.

The documentary, which will be shown on ESPN Tuesday at 9PM, draws comparisons between the soccer player’s life and death, and that of notorious drug trafficker Pablo Escobar.

Relatives claim that interviews granted to the documentary producers were done under the assumption that the film would be an intimate portrayal of the soccer player’s personal and professional life. Instead, the film exploits the memory of Escobar and does not offer an accurate depiction of the man, who was “a model of righteousness and diligence,” says the family.

Andres Escobar was shot in 1994 outside a bar in Medellin, after having scored an own goal in the FIFA World Cup. Many believe that the killing was motivated by gambling losses incurred by powerful drug lords, including the infamous Pablo Escobar.
