Presidential candidate Juan Manuel Santos is consolidating his lead in the race for the Colombian presidency, according to the latest poll published Thursday by newscast CM&. Santos’ main opponent, Green Party candidate Antanas Mockus, continues to lose points.
For the first time in weeks, the voters polled not only favor Santos over Mockus in the first round, but also prefer the Partido de la U candidate in a possible second round runoff.
According to the poll, Juan Manuel Santos will get the votes of 39% of the population, while Mockus will get 34%.
Last week’s poll also showed an advantage for Santos who was forced to renew his campaign team following a surprise surge in the polls by Mockus in previous weeks. This week the Partido de la U candidate’s lead grew from three percentage points to five.
If no candidates receives more than 50% of the votes in the first round of voting, a second round will be held between the top two candidates. According to the poll, Santos would barely win this runoff against Mockus with 47% against 46%.
The support of the remaining candidates remains solid as Noemi Sanin kept the support of 9% of the interviewees, Gustavo Petro 5% and German Vargas Lleras and Rafael Pardo 4%.
Colombia’s presidential elections will be held on May 30.
