One dead in Colombian illegal mine collapse

An illegal gold mine in the Colombian town of Ituango, Antioquia department, collapsed killing one person and wounding another, local media reported Thursday.

El Tiempo identifies the deceased man as Rafael Tamayo, a 35-year-old farmer, and the wounded as a 16-year-old boy named Disney Giraldo.

The roof of the mine caved in in a landslide, and the boy was trapped for five hours before being rescued and flown by air ambulance to a hospital in Medellin, the regional capital.

Investigation officials say that the mine did not have proper safety measures.
