Actor John Leguizamo brings his story to Medellin

Colombian actor John Leguizamo will present his hit show “Pelado de Barrio” at a Medellin theater Tuesday and Wednesday.

The autobiographical comedy will tell the story of his childhood as a Latino in New York, his conflicting sense of culture, his acting career, and more.

“Ghetto Klown,” as the show is known in English, received rave reviews in the U.S. and Canada, where Leguizamo has been touring for the last year. He began a Colombian tour in Bogota last week.

Leguizamo, who has been in Colombia for the Hay literature festival in Cartagena, defines himself as a man between cultures and nationality. He says as a hyperactive child in a rough neighborhood, he used comedy as a method of self-preservation.

At age 17, a teacher saw talent in him and started teaching him theater.

He has since been in over 50 movies and uses his art to commentate on the human condition and social issues.

“Pelado de Barrio” is playing at the University of Medellin theater. For more information, visit the theater’s website.
