5 slain in Medellin massacre

Five persons died and one was injured in Medellin early Sunday when assassins opened fire at hundreds of people celebrating “Dia de Amor y Amistad,” the Colombian version of Valentine’s Day.

The massacre took place in the north eastern 12 de Octubre neighborhood of the capital of Antioquia.

According to witnesses, unknown assassins started shooting at the crowd of more than 400 people from inside a taxi.

The shooting left three men, one woman and one boy dead.

Medellin has been suffering soaring violence since mid 2008, particularly in the poor barrios in the west, north west and north east.

According to official figures, more than 1250 people were murdered in the city so far this year, another 2,500 Medellin citizens were forced to flee their homes.
