$38,000 stolen from Bogota prison

Officials at the infamous La Modelo prison in Bogota told the Colombian prison authority (INPEC) that COP77 million ($38,000) was stolen from a safe in the administrative section of the prison, reports El Espectador.

Prison authorities said the stolen money was from the sale of food bought on visiting days, but gave no information on an investigation into the theft.

In late May, three prisoners died and another 25 were injured during a riot at the Bogota prison after protests erupted over the transfer of an inmate in a bid to control micro drug trafficking within the jail.

La Modelo is known as one of Colombia’s most dangerous jails, holding common criminals, guerrillas and paramilitaries.
