Three simultaneous explosions rocked the town of Tumaco in Colombia’s southwestern Nariño department on Thursday.
One explosion affected the airport of the city of Tumaco, while another destroyed part of a local police station. The third explosion was allegedly directed against an anti-narcotics unit of the Colombian police.
Locals said there were gunshots in the outskirts of the city after the explosions. There were no reports of civilian or military casualties as of Thursday morning.
Later on Thursday, authorities attributed the attacks to the rebel group FARC’s Daniel Aldana Column.
Several armed groups, including drug trafficking organization “Los Rastrojos” and the FARC, are active in the territory surrounding Tumaco, located next to Colombia’s Pacific coast in the southwestern Nariño department. The city is considered a strategic area for drug traffickers due to its proximity to some of Colombia’s main coca growing areas and the Pacific ocean.
