Woman found accompanying inmate in Bogota prison cell

A woman is found accompanying an inmate in his cell in Bogota’s troubled La Picota prison Thursday.

According to the National Penitentiary and Prison Institute (INPEC) a surprise inspection by prison officials lead to the discovery of the woman as well as the confiscation of 54 cell phones and a number of goods that entered the prison illegally.

Authorities claim that the woman entered the jail by posing as the lawyer of Luis Eduardo Cifuente, a prominent former paramilitary commander. The inmate in whose cell she was found in remains unnamed.

Prison officials are investigating these misconducts and will continue the inspections in Colombia’s 142 prisons in an attempt to maintain “order, control, and governance.”

This comes only a week after a fire injured up to 15 inmates in the prison.
