Colombian woman arrested after girl falls from 18th floor

The woman who was caring for a 6-year-old girl when she plunged 18 stories from a building in Medellin has been charged with attempted murder, said police.

Alejandra Salazar Rengifo, the 24-year-old girlfriend of the youngster’s father, went before a judge Monday to hear the charges, though it is still not known whether she will be prosecuted, reported newspaper El Espectador. Doctors said the girl, who has not been identified, is in stable but critical condition at El Rosario hospital.

The incident occurred last Thursday at a high-rise apartment building in Medellin’s upscale El Poblado neighborhood. The girl plunged about 148 feet from the building’s 18th floor, police said.

The investigation of Salazar, who was arrested Sunday, began when the girl spoke to doctors before losing consciousness. Carlos Alberto Sanchez, the medical director of El Rosario hospital, said that the girl told doctors that “she was playing with someone near the balcony” before the fall.

“That someone is the woman who was detained,” he said.
